As its name implies, a FAQ page is a commonly-used functional page where there are a bunch of frequently-asked questions. This kind of page is needed when you are going to launch a new product or company site. Plus, it is a great tool for increasing organic search traffic. A good rule of thumb is that the more information you provide, the more followers you will get.
Frankly speaking, it takes a lot of time and work to have a manually-coded FAQ page especially for beginners and new starters. On the other hand, to create a FAQ page has been much simpler and easier with the help of various WordPress plugins, such as WordPress FAQ Manager. At this place, we would like to show you the detailed approaches and suggestions on creating a FAQ page on WordPress site. Scroll down and get to the point.
Why Use a WordPress Plugin?
As is noted above, you are allowed to set up a FAQ page by using a user-friendly WordPress plugin or your own coding skills. However, it is recommendable to adopt the former approach if you have no preferred FAQ page structures and know little technical knowledge. To say the least, a customizable WordPress plugin, such as WordPress FAQ Manager, allows you to navigate an FAQ section by using the existing custom post taxonomies and types.
On top of that, you are empowered to group some relevant questions together and to create all kinds of tags or topics without trying hard to code a thing from scratch. Of course, you will be served with a well-designed site structure where visitors can search and find satisfying answers with least efforts. As you may suspect, this plugin also helps with your SEO rankings.

Install WordPress FAQ Manager
First of all, you need to install this “WordPress FAQ Manager” plugin, which can refer to this plugin installation tutorial. In short, you should search and install this plugin in the section of “Add New” in “Plugins”. Once done, click the button of “Installed Plugins” to look and “Activate” this “WordPress FAQ Manager” plugin on the right hand. If works properly, you can notice that there are four editing options under its name.
Display a New Post Type
In the meantime, it is obvious that there is a new custom post type lying under the section of “Pages” on your dashboard menu. Till this step, you have successfully created all of your FAQ lists, with which you can manage and edit everything on the FAQ page. In details, there are several editing options on the left sidebar, including “Add New”, “Topics”, “Tags”, “Sort FAQs”, “Settings” and “Instructions”.
To be frank, one spotlight of “WordPress FAQ Manager” is the mentioned “Instructions” functionality, with which you can add FAQs to WordPress post/page in an easy-to-use way.
How to Customize a FAQ Page on WordPress?
From the steps above, it is not difficult to create a FAQ page on WordPress by using the “WordPress FAQ Manager” plugin. In the further, to create a FAQ is extremely similar to write a blog page/post as this plugin inherits their default functionalities. But before starting with the FAQ page creation, you’d better make some prior settings as follows.
Make Some Personalized Settings
To do so, you only need to click the mentioned “Settings” option. On the editing menu, you will notice that there are several options for “Display”, “Content” and “SEO” in below. Undoubtedly, you can make settings of your own requirements, but we recommend those settings displayed in the following screenshot.
As is suggested, it is recommendable to choose “H2” type for FAQ title, which is out of the best practices of SEO. Plus, you’d better make a hit in the checkbox of “Include iQuery collapse/expand” to disallow the FAQ titles to link to every FAQ post. At the same time, remember to choose the checkbox of “Apply noindex header tag to FAQs” so as to make your FAQ post not indexed by a search engine. Note that you can change the current theme appearance by making full use of the built-in CSS of “WordPress FAQ Manager”, and this is optional. Do not forget to “Save Changes” at last.
Add Content to Your FAQ Pages
Having done with the steps above, you will need to add your own content to FAQ pages. As is mentioned above, to “Add New FAQ” is similar to write a page/post. Pay attention that the title of every FAQ post should be the question, and the body should be the answer. Additionally, you can add some new FAQ topics by clicking the link of “Add New FAQ Topics” on the right side. For details, you can refer to the following example.
There is no doubt that you can also add “FAQ Tags” placed under the section of “FAQ Topics”. You are also allowed to sort each FAQ page by clicking the button of “Sort FAQs”.
Edit Menus of FAQ Pages
Next, you are required to enter the “Menus” section in “Appearance”. To put it into effect, you should firstly choose the type of menu in the “Manage Locations” section.
Once activated, enter the “Edit Menus” section and find out the created FAQ pages in the category of “FAQs”. Then, add the FAQ posts to the menu structure by clicking “Add to Menu” button. If everything goes right, you will see a list of the newly-added posts on the right side. Keep in mind that you should adjust the order that you want the posts and topics to display on WordPress site.
Here, we make a FAQ topic named “Sleep” as the sub-item of the FAQ page, and place the relevant pages specified as the “Sleep” topic under the directory of sub-item. Do not forget to “Save Menu” to make it work. Here, we would like to present you with a sample FAQ page based on the above steps.
How about Using a New FAQ Template?
From the above screenshot, you may find that the appearance of our FAQ page is similar to the default post/page type. To have a differently-looking appearance of a FAQ page, you’d better add styling codes to a new custom page template. Note that this step is not necessary, but you can also refer to the following steps to make some differences.
To do so, you need to enter the “Editor” section in the “Appearance” to find the previously-created page template. Alternatively, you can navigate to it by logging into the server and find the correspondent custom page template file. Back to the point, we would like to show some sample codes to display questions and answers in a unique way.
On the one hand, you can make a list of the questions by adding the following codes. In this way, you can link to the specific answers by clicking the FAQ title.
<?php query_posts('post_type=question&order=ASC') ?> <?php if (have_posts()) : ?> <h3>FAQs</h3> <div id="questions"> <ul> <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <li><a href="#answer<?php the_id() ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></li> <?php endwhile; ?> </ul> </div> <?php else : ?> <h3>Not Found</h3> <p>Sorry, No FAQs created yet.</p> <?php endif; ?>
On the other hand, you can also choose to display the title and content of each post on your WordPress site. And you will see all the FAQ posts listed on the same page. To achieve it, you may refer to the following codes.
<?php rewind_posts(); ?> <?php if (have_posts()) : ?> <div id="answers"> <ul> <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <li id="answer<?php the_id(); ?>"> <h4><?php the_title(); ?></h4> <?php the_content(); ?> </li> <?php endwhile; ?> </ul> </div> <?php endif; ?> <?php wp_reset_query(); ?> <? //end?> </div><!-- #content --> </div><!-- #primary --> <?php get_sidebar(); ?> <?php get_footer(); ?>
Also, you are allowed to customize a clean layout and add some shadow effects to your WordPress sites, which is of personal preferences. In the following screenshot, there is a well-established FAQ page which is based on the mentioned codes. As it is, WordPress is a powerful content management software, and the only limit is your imagination.
An Alternative Method to Create the WordPress FAQ Section
There is another useful tool for the creation of WordPress FAQ section – the FAQ plugin. With it, you can showcase unlimited questions and answers with the accordion display, helping readers to navigate to the right questions quickly without taking up too many spaces on your webpage. Even, you can categorize these questions. This feature is really useful for some websites that offer multiple products and services.
To use this plugin, you do not need to set up a lot of configurations. After installing it using your WordPress admin, you can click the newly-added FAQ tab in your website back-end. Then, hit the Setting button from the drop-down menu.
Start with the General Settings
Here, you need to decide some general settings, including whether to showcase the social sharing buttons, published date, the number of views for each question, the number of comments, published authors, the number of votes and many more in the FAQ section.
Personally, we recommend you to turn on all of these options.
Create the FAQ Categories
If you only have a single set of products or services introduced in your website, you can pass this step. On the contrary, if you have multiple items showcased, each of which requires an exclusive section for FAQ, you can create the FAQ categories to separate them from each other.
To do this, you only need to click the FAQ Category button, enter the category name, slug and description, and click the Add New Category button. It is as simple as adding a new category for your blog posts.
Pay Attention to the FAQ Template
This might be the minor drawback of this plugin. With it, you can only use the default theme with the blue color scheme. If you want to choose among some other fancy themes and modify the font, padding, color, border width, spaces and many more, you need to upgrade to the pro version that charges you starting at $20.
But personally speaking, the default template can be suitable for the majority of common website designs.
Create the Questions and Answers
Now, you can start to add the questions and the corresponding answers by clicking the Add Question button.
In fact, the process is just like publishing a blog post. The title section is for your question and the body part is for your answer. Here, we sincerely recommend you to make your questions as concise as possible and make the answers as detailed as possible.
Before publishing the question, you also need to set up the Discussion part and the Category part. The former one allows you to open comments for FAQ section and the latter one requires you to choose the FAQ category.
Note that you can publish as many FAQs as you want with this plugin.
Insert the FAQ Section into Your Webpage
If none of your current pages are suitable for adding the FAQ section, you’d better publish a new webpage that is for showcasing these commonly asked questions and answers exclusively.
In the editing page, you need to convert to the Visual Editor. Here, you can find a new button that looks like a question mark. Simply click it and decide the following options.
- Choose the FAQ categories to be displayed. You can choose multiple categories in one time.
- Decide whether to showcase the category names, descriptions and the ordering number.
- Determine whether to display the likes, hits, dates, search box and publishers. There is an option asking you whether to expand all the answers once the page is loaded. Personally, to guarantee the accordion display, you’d better not to enable it.
Now, you can click the OK button and publish this page. Looking to know how it looks? Just check the following sample image.
Make the FAQ Page Showcased in Your Navigation Bar
To be frank, this special page holds the same importance as the pages of “Knowledge Base”, “Contact Us”, “About Us” and some others. In this case, you’d better add it to your navigation bar so that people can find it easily.
To do this, you need to click the Menu button from the Appearance tab. Here, you can find your newly published FAQ page. Just click it and hit the Add to Menu button. That’s it! You have the FAQ showcased in your navigation successfully.
